Laced with deeply funky grooves, shivering harp samples and lazy drums, ‘The Realness’ feels both rooted in The Pheels’s soulful heritage and also heavily influenced by psychedelia. What is consistent across all their releases to date, however, is the duo’s exceptional capacity to manipulate vintage samples into modern R&B, and with the tantalising caption ‘1 of 4’ on SoundCloud, it looks likely that The Pheels will be dropping more music in the months to come... -HM
